Radio Caroline to replace masts on Ross Revenge

UK-based Radio Caroline says on its website about its radio ship Ross Revenge, which just completed a weekend of low power (licensed) transmissions on mediumwave 531 kHz on 31 August:
“As you may have heard the twin masts on board the ship need to be taken down and a new aerial system installed, likely to take the form of a new central mast. It’s a fairly lengthy and expensive procedure, but we do hope to have the work completed by Easter 2011.
“What of further broadcasts on 531? We had already planned for the New Year holiday 2010/11 to be included within the current set and we will make great efforts try and ensure this still goes ahead, regardless of whether the Ross still has its mast by then or not.”

Mysterious Russian ‘buzzer’ radio broadcast changes
The output of Russian number station UVB-76 has increased dramatically over the past week or so. The station, which broadcasts from near Povarovo [on 4625 kHz AM with suppressed lower sideband], is known as “The Buzzer” by its listeners because of the short, monotonous buzz tone that it normally plays 21 to 34 times per minute. It’s only deviated from that signal three times previously - briefly in 1997, 2002 and 2006.
In early August, a garbled recording of a voice speaking Russian was heard by listeners. A few days later, on 23 August at 13:35 UTC, a clearer voice read out the following message twice: “UVB-76, UVB-76 — 93 882 naimina 74 14 35 74 — 9 3 8 8 2 nikolai, anna, ivan, michail, ivan, nikolai, anna, 7, 4, 1, 4, 3, 5, 7, 4″, before returning to its normal broadcasting.
Since then, a number of other distorted voices have appeared over the normal buzzing transmission, as well as knocks and shuffles, as if someone were moving things around inside the broadcasting room. It’s believed that the transmission site has an open microphone, which occasionally picks up sounds from technicians working within the broadcast site.

Radio Caroline is back on 531 KHz !
Radio Caroline is back on 531 KHz this bank holiday weekend. They are also celebrating the 50th birthday of their radio ship Ross Revenge. It was from here that Radio Caroline was relaunched in 1983. Radio Caroline's medium wave broadcasts during the weekend will take place from the studios aboard the ship under a low power AM license at 531 kHz. The AM coverage is officially in south Essex and north Kent although in the past dxers have reported the station from significantly further afield. As the signal is moving over salt water the groundwave signal should take it across the North Sea. In addition as the signal is on the lowest-end of the AM broadcast band it should travel twice as far as a signal broadcast on, say, 1600 kHz. Mike Terry via mwdx yg (23/8-2010)

Family Radio på svenska !!
19/8 22:52 Hej Alf, you are right, they have been transmitting in Swedish already for a month, 1900-2000 UTC, 9850 via Krasnodar. Not very efficient marketing about the programme! 73, Mauno

Radio Free Asia Issues 14th Anniversary QSL Card
Radio Free Asia (RFA) announces the release of our 14th anniversary QSL card. RFA’s first broadcast was in Mandarin on September 29, 1996 at 2100 UTC. This card will be used to confirm all valid reception reports from September 1 – December 31, 2010. The design is a simple photo collage made from a small sample of the many stories RFA has covered in the past 14 years. Acting as a substitute for indigenous free media, RFA concentrates its coverage on events occurring in and/or affecting the countries to which it broadcasts. Those countries are: Burma, Cambodia, Laos, North Korea, Peoples Republic of China and Vietnam.
RFA is a private, nonprofit corporation that broadcasts news and information to listeners in Asian countries where full, accurate, and timely news reports are unavailable. Created by Congress in 1994 and incorporated in 1996, RFA currently broadcasts in Burmese, Cantonese, Khmer, Korean to North Korea, Lao, Mandarin, the Wu dialect, Vietnamese, Tibetan (Uke, Amdo, and Kham), and Uyghur. RFA strives for accuracy, balance, and fairness in its editorial content. As a ‘surrogate’ broadcaster, RFA provides news and commentary specific to each of its target countries, acting as the free press these countries lack. RFA broadcasts only in local languages and dialects, and most of its broadcasts comprise news of specific local interest. More information about Radio Free Asia, including our current broadcast frequency schedule, is available at www.rfa.org.
RFA encourages listeners to submit reception reports. Reception reports are valuable to RFA as they help us evaluate the signal strength and quality of our transmissions. RFA confirms all accurate reception reports by mailing a QSL card to the listener. RFA welcomes all reception report submissions at www.techweb.rfa.org (follow the QSL REPORTS link) not only from DX’ers, but also from its general listening audience. Reception reports are also accepted by email at qsl@rfa.org, and for anyone without Internet access, reception reports can be mailed to: Reception Reports Radio Free Asia 2025 M. Street NW, Suite 300 Washington DC 20036 United States of America
Upon request, RFA will also send a copy of the current broadcast schedule and a station sticker.

Radio St. Helena Day 2010 : Date , Times, and Targets
RSD 2010 will be on Saturday, 09. October 2010
Target Region Times (UTC ) Beam Heading ============================= EUROPE 1900 - 2030 UTC 10 degrees INDIA 2030 - 2130 UTC 70 degrees JAPAN 2130 - 2300 UTC 50 degrees NORTH AMERICA 2300 - 0030 UTC 310 degrees
Gary Walters, Station Manager of Radio St. Helena, has just confirmed the above information, and, as usual, Derek Richards will operate the RSD shortwave transmitting facility.
There will be a special email-address exclusively for the evening of RSD 2010. As soon as Gary sets up this special email account, we will publish the account name.
The RSD 2010 QSL cards are being sponsored by the Danish ShortWave Club International. Reception reports for RSD 2010 should be sent with sufficient return postage to RSH using the special Airmail address via Ascension and the United Kingdom -- exactly the same procedure as for the RSD 2009 reception reports. ALL mail to RSH should use this procedure.
All 266 QSLs for RSD 2009 have been mailed and should now be arriving around the world.
The sunspot minimum between sunspot cycles 23 and 24 is the longest in history -- much to the dismay of shortwave listeners everywhere. This minimum has lasted since 2007 and is still ongoing. There are not very many sunspots to "help" propagation, and there is no real sign of significant change. The UTC-times for broadcasting to the various target area have been very carefully selected to to have the very best chance of good reception in each area. Also, we need to have the RSD broadcasts one after the other. After RSD 2009, it was decided to change the times somewhat and to move RSD from November to October (as was the case back in the late 1990's --(Thanks, John). RSH hopes that everyone around the world has excellent reception conditions during RSD 2010 and is looking forward to your emails and also, if possible, to your telephone calls.
With very best 73, Gary Walters , Station Manager of Radio St. Helena via Robert Kipp

Hello FRS-Holland Friends!
Already some time ago we informed you about the upcoming FRS 30 Years celebrations. In the mean time we have received a number of contributions, we feel the on air celebration would be incomplete without our listeners' input! Of course contributions from colleague SW stations are also very much appreciated. Still we haven't heard from many listeners whose contribution would be much appreciated. We are talking about many faithful listeners who already tuned long time ago. For us at FRSH your contribution is 'invaluable' !!
So we once again appeal on you.... Preparations are in an advanced stage and we once again invite you as FRSH listener to participate. Instead of writing a letter following a broadcast, we kindly ask for your personal FRS memories. Either you put them 1) on a sheet of paper or send them by mail and 2) most wanted: record your personal message and send an mp3 audio file. All listener's contributions will be collected and together it will be our anthology of 30 years of SW broadcasts. When did you hear us for the first time, what was your favorite show, when did you get your first QSL, how much did you listen to FRS, any special on air moments you remember? All this info could be part of your personal FRS contribution.
Send your contribution to <frs@frsholland.nl> or POBox 2702, 6049 ZG Herten, the Netherlands.
All the best from all of us at FRSH! On behalf of the FRS Staff, Peter Verbruggen

New shortwave receiver coming from Sangean !!
Shortwave broadcasting may be on the decline, but it’s not dead yet. Receiver manufacturer Sangean has a new portable shortwave receiver scheduled for release by the end of 2010. The ATS-909X is described by the manufacturer as “the flagship of the Sangean line of AM/FM/SW Receivers.” According to Sangean, “it provides performance and features generally found in the more expensive table top communication receivers into a very compact and stylish package.” More details are available on the Sangean website.

Unfortunately - or fortunately, depending on your point of view - the ATS-909X does not provide DRM reception. The new set appears on the website of Sangean North America, but not on the website of Sangean Europe. The website of Universal Radio adds that ‘This new model is expected November 2010. We are not accepting orders yet.’ According to Universal Radio, the list price is $449.95, but they will be selling it for $259.95. Inlagt: 9/8 Källa: RNW Media Network

Croatian Radio and Television plans drastic staff cuts

Croatian State Radio and Television (HRT) could be letting go of as many as 600 employees as part of its restructuring plan, local media has reported. The company’s acting director Josip Popovac declined to say how many jobs would be cut until the plan was completed.
“It is true that within the framework of the plan we will have to make some cuts, but it is irresponsible to speak about the details until the plan is finished,” he said, adding that the number would not be as high as 600.
The Croatian daily Jutarnji List writes that the brunt of the cuts will be among the company’s administrators and technicians, while the majority of journalists are likely to be spared. The company currently employs around 3,500

Keeping the night alive on 1395
From 23:00 CET every night, Big L International sets about keeping the night alive. While the majority of Europe’s radio stations switch to non-stop music selected by computers, Big L International brings out its stars to entertain listeners throughout the small hours. We also keep in mind our fleets of truckers, who thunder along Europe’s roads while most folks are asleep.
The legendary, Brooklyn-born, Wolfman Jack, with his outrageous catchphrases and unique style, has left a legacy of some of the best shows ever recorded for radio. Big L International is proud to keep the memory and music of the Wolfman alive every night on 1395.
If the Wolfman was the USA’s biggest star, there’s no doubt that Emperor Rosko is Europe’s. The witty, multilingual, fast-talking, American son of the famous Hollywood movie producer Joe Pasternak, was influenced by the Wolfman in his teens and became a big star on British radio, first on pirate station Radio Caroline, then Luxembourg and then the BBC. This entertaining and up-to-the-minute show is produced especially for Big L in his studios in California and can be heard on week nights from midnight CET.

Radio Taiwan International celebrates 82nd birthday
Radio Taiwan International (RTI) celebrated its 82nd birthday today (2/8). Premier Wu Den-yih spoke at a celebration to mark the anniversary. “RTI is already 82 years old,” said Wu. “[The station] is not showing its age, but rather brimming with vitality. The major reason is that it has kept with the times, in the process becoming timeless.”
Mr Wu also said that RTI serves as an important pathway to expose Chinese listeners to Taiwan’s democracy. A letter from President Ma Ying-jeou was also read during the ceremony. President Ma praised the station for the service it performs by broadcasting Taiwan’s vibrant democracy for the world to hear. He also said he hopes [the station] can go on increasing Taiwan’s global visibility.
On Monday, RTI also launched a multimedia platform. The platform includes three parts: Media Asset Management (MAM), an audiovisual network and a broadcast scheduling system.

IARUMS to concentrate on cleaning-up 40 metres
The South African Radio League's councillor for the IARU Monitoring System (IARUMS), Fred Scheepers, ZS1FCS, invites radio amateurs and shortwave listeners to join a campaign to remove non-amateur stations from the 40 metre amateur band.
It requires many persons to monitor the band from 7 000 - 7 200 kHz for intruders and record their details such as the station ID, the frequency and time. Many intruder broadcast stations will broadcast their ID on the hour and half hour. If you cannot understand the language make an mp3 recording or a wave file and add it to your report. Fred has set a special email address that is easy to remember. It is intruder@sarl.org.za (The South African Radio League) http://www.southgatearc.org/news/august2010/cleaning_up_40m.htm
